24-HOUR FILMMAKING MARATHON
Decription: The 24-hour filmmaking marathon is a fun competition and a highlight of the festival. Every year dozens of groups sign up to participate, and all finished films are screened during the festival to a crowd of around 500 people. Past entries have gone on to play at film festivals nationwide. Every participating group has only 24 hours to write, shoot and edit a 3-minute short film. No more than five people (cast and crew) per group are allowed to participate.
Awards: $20 of each group's entry fee will go towards the award money. In 2009, the following prizes were paid out: 1st place..............................$500.00 2nd place.............................$250.00 3rd place..............................$100.00 Certificates for Honorable Mention and Audience Choice will also be awarded.
Length: 3 minutes or less
Criteria: The LDS Film Festival is looking for entries demonstrating intelligence, spirituality, originality, integrity, and technical excellence in their approach to the subject matter and motto of the festival. No foul language, sexual content or graphic violence will be permitted. All submissions must be in English or subtitled in English.
Subject Matter: Every year we will announce a new theme right before the 24 hour competition starts. With each theme we also ask each group to implement a specific object and dialogue line in their film. Last year's theme was "Sacrifice," the object was a match, and the dialogue line was "Let me be your...".
Rules and Regulations: You can use any equipment and format of your choice, but your final film needs to be submitted on a DVD-R or mini-DV. At least one member of the group needs to be present for sign-up and drop-off. You need to know your team members when you sign-up. All films must be completely original and all permissions must be retained for any copyrighted media. Every group promises that it will play fair and keep the rules of the filmmaking marathon. No late entries will be allowed.
Submission Deadline: You will not have to submit an entry form for this competition. At least one group member needs to be present when the competition starts on Friday, January 15, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. All films have to be finished and handed in 24 hours later on Saturday, January 16, at 10:00 a.m.
Entry Fee: $45 per group ($9 per person) NOTE: Part of the entry fee ($20) will go towards the prize money. The entry fee also includes 5 tickets (value of $35) for the 24-hour filmmaking marathon screening on Thursday, January 21, 2010, at 6:30 p.m.
Judging: Entries will be judged based on artistic and technical proficiency, content and adherence to all contest rules. Additional points will be given for creative use of theme, object and dialogue line. Votes are determined on a grade point average. Judges' decisions are final.
Screenings: All films will be screened and judged on Thursday, January 21, 2010, beginning 6:30 p.m.
Entry Form: Each group has to sign up on the day the competition starts. More information will be available on this website beginning January 1, 2010. |
